3 Character Traits That Help Pharmacy Techs Succeed

HomeWellness3 Character Traits That Help Pharmacy Techs Succeed

Dealing with all kinds of customers and all sorts of medication can put pharmacy technicians through the wringer. However, techs are able to get through stressful moments based on positive character traits. These go much further than just having a good attitude. Pharmacy techs are able to excel in their role through these traits.

Teachable

Pharmacy techs don’t just need to be smart. They also need to be teachable. Even if someone knows everything there is about medication, they still need to have their mind opened for potential changes in how prescription drugs are studied and taken. They also need to understand how to deal with different situations. Most transactions are pleasant and easy, but there will be people who are aggressive and hostile. Pharmacy techs must be able to calm these storms and do their part to avoid putting themselves and their coworkers in danger.

Detail-Oriented

Detail-oriented pharmacy techs are a necessity for the industry. Precision and attention to detail are important qualities for pharmacy techs, as they are responsible for tasks such as taking inventory and filling prescriptions. If a pharmacy tech gets an inventory count wrong or gives the wrong dosage of medication to a customer, it could be disastrous. They are being trusted to give every customer exactly what they need. This means they need to be in the present at all times. Should they ever find themselves spacing out, they need to become aware of their surroundings and bring their attention to a task that needs to be accomplished. If they’re finding themselves lost in other thoughts, they should step out for a moment to clear their mind. Pharmaceutical calculations need to be on-point.

Comprehension

Understanding medication is very important for pharmacy techs. Even if they don’t have firsthand experience with a medication, they should still be decently versed in how it should be taken and what to expect. Whenever they encounter a new medication, they need to review its characteristics and common questions that patients might have. If the pharmacist is answering questions about the medication, the pharmacy tech should pay attention and take notes. They’ll be able to slowly accumulate invaluable knowledge this way.

Organizing medication, handling phone calls, and dealing with potentially irate customers is all in a day’s work for pharmacy techs. Those who love what they do are able to value the bad moments as helping them to become more patient and get through stress more easily. If you want to become a great pharmacy tech, you need to have these three traits at your disposal.
