How to Be a Responsible Dog Owner

HomeInsightsHow to Be a Responsible Dog Owner

Being a dog owner is a fantastic experience. You have a best friend who loves you unconditionally. That also means you have several responsibilities that must be kept to be respectful to those around you. Your pet deserves basic respect and love as well.

Take Care of Them

Deciding to get any kind of pet is an automatic acceptance of responsibility. Domesticated animals are quite helpless on their own. They require food, water, exercise, playtime, attention, and medicine–among other things. Make sure to research the pet you want before you get it so that you know what kind of responsibilities you’re taking on.

A dog’s needs are not complicated, but they’re not exactly easy either. Every dog needs to be walked and fed appropriate, nutritious food. They also will want to play and spend time with you. Certain breeds may have specific issues or needs that you will want to be aware of.

Keep Them on a Leash

You may want your dog to run free and be happy–and you should! There will be opportunities to do that kind of thing in the right environment. But it’s important to keep your dog leashed whenever you’re out in public. This is especially true when your dog is still being trained since it hasn’t learned how to behave itself.

Even the nicest, most well-meaning dogs can end up in hard situations if they’re not leashed. Other, more aggressive dogs might provoke it. Or a misunderstanding could lead to serious problems with young children. Dog owners may be held liable for injuries their dog inflicts on other people.

Adopt From Ethical Sources

You might be surprised just how much of the modern animal-centric industry treats its subjects inhumanely. Stores that sell puppies and purebred puppies for hundreds of dollars almost always are connected to puppy mill companies that consistently care more about profits than they do about the health and well-being of their dogs. Adopting from pounds or adoption centers is a wonderful, fantastic option that is cheaper and more humane. People often don’t because puppies are hard to find, but older dogs are just as worthy of a good home as younger dogs are.

Being a dog owner can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. But to achieve that, you need to be worthy of a dog’s love. Be the owner and friend that your dog deserves by putting in the necessary effort.
