There’s a large variety of things you can focus on at the gym. Cardio gets a lot of attention, but strength training is an important part of a balanced workout plan. If you have never down any strength training, it may be a little intimidating at first, but it comes with a large number of benefits that you shouldn’t be passing up.

Lose Weight

Any workout is going to expend the calories that you need to burn to lose weight, but strength training will help your body work round the clock burning more calories. Everyone has a basal metabolic rate that determines how many calories they burn just living. 

The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn just by existing. This does mean that you may not see as much of a change on the scale after a while because muscle weighs more than fat does, but you will slim down, have more energy, and burn off the extra unhealthy weight when you focus on strength training.

Reduce Risk of Injury

Injury can happen in a variety of ways, but if you are regular in the gym, overuse, improper movement, weak areas, and other issues can cause injury very easily. You can use strength training to target specific areas of your body to reduce the risk of injury. 

If you’re worried about shoulder pain, training those muscles makes them less prone to injury. Focusing your training to strengthen the muscles, tendons, and ligaments will help your body protect those areas. If you have had injuries in the past, it is a good idea to consult a trainer or physical therapist to make sure that you are properly training for this.

Build Confidence

Accomplishing hard things and seeing regular improvement is a great way to build your confidence. Strength training is not easy. You have to work hard at having the proper posture and pushing through failure. Hitting a PR is a big thing, but it is something that you can accomplish with strength training. Additionally, as you lose weight and understand how your body works better, you will feel more confident in how you look and you will feel more able to accomplish things in everyday life.

If you are worried that you don’t know where to start, your gym likely has trainers that you can reach out to for help. If you aren’t comfortable with that, talk to your gym friends and ask them to help you figure out how to start. Strength training is an important part of any workout regime, so don’t neglect that.
