Tips for Controlling Anxiety So it Doesn’t Control You

HomeVital EdgeTips for Controlling Anxiety So it Doesn't Control You

Anxiety is extremely uncomfortable, but efforts to get rid of such feelings tend to do nothing but lead to further discomfort. You can’t force it away, but there are things that can make it easier to live with, leading to a much calmer existence. These are some tips that let you show your anxiety who’s in charge.

Healthy Coping Mechanisms

Seeking refuge in a comfort is an excellent way to deal with anxiety, but you need to make sure it’s something good for you. Healthy coping mechanisms let you put your attention to something besides your anxiety and work toward a better state of mind. These are things like going for a bike ride, drinking some herbal tea, or calling a friend. On the other hand, unhealthy coping mechanisms can lure you with the promise of a quick fix, but they’re actually just empty solutions. These include things like drinking heavily and taking drugs or indulging in unhealthy foods. Denial can also be an unhealthy coping mechanism. If you want to actually deal with your anxiety, you need to accept it for what it is.

Utilizing Medication

Advancements in psychiatric medicine have led to very strong anti-anxiety medications. Many people have found debilitating anxiety is not the issue it once was thanks to medication. Before starting any medication, consult with your doctor about what to expect. Take only the prescribed daily dosage, and report any issues to your doctor right away. According to SuperNature CBD, some patients don’t respond well to common anxiety medications, and for those people, relief might be found in CBD, which has been shown to be an effective anti-anxiety treatment. If you notice a favorable response from a treatment, it can mean a lot for your mental health.

Mindfulness

Some people have a misguided view of mindfulness and how it works for anxiety. They can believe that the goal is to be mindful to the point of unshakable calm. Mindfulness practices, such as breath meditation, should not be done with the expectation of achieving any one result because having such expectations can lead to immense pressure that only causes more frustration. Instead, you should just let yourself be how you are. According to Yoga Outlet, all you have to do is notice your feelings, and let them have a presence. You might be surprised by how much more easily you can deal with anxiety when you’re not trying so hard to push it away.

People spend so much time trying to undo anxiety that they don’t realize the solutions are far more accessible than they realize. You may also need to look inside yourself and become an ally to your anxiety. It’s only as powerful as you let it be. By getting your anxiety in check, you can put your body and mind in much safer hands.
