Why the Stigma Around Mental Health Is More Dangerous Than You Think

HomeWellnessWhy the Stigma Around Mental Health Is More Dangerous Than You Think

People often perceive a visit to their local therapist as an indication that they are going crazy. They will avoid it all costs. Unfortunately, this means that whatever problems are building up in their lives are hurting their mental well-being. A large part of this is due to the fact that there is a stigma around mental health. It is almost taboo to talk about it in the workplace or to your close friends. Unfortunately, this stigma is hurting a lot of people and keeping them from getting help. Here is a closer look at the damage this stigma is causing.

The Stigma Is Damaging the Workforce

A good amount of the stressors that we experience each day comes from the workplace. We are constantly under pressure to perform at our best in order to succeed at work. Unfortunately, these stressors can negatively affect our mental state over time. This can leave us burnt out and depressed. Unfortunately, talking about mental health at work is often frowned upon. This is an unfortunate reality that is costing companies millions of dollars each year in the form of lost productivity.

It’s Stopping Us From Teaching Valuable Life Skills

There are many techniques that help exercise the mind. Meditation is one of the most popular methods that can help alleviate stress and promote wellness. Unfortunately, meditation is not taught in public schools. There are several simple techniques to help ground anxiety that everyone should know, but parents rarely teach these techniques to children. The key to family health is teaching your children the importance of a healthy mind. Unfortunately, this lack of information is hurting children more than we realize. We are not equipping them with the tools necessary to take a stand against mental illness. This will no doubt create ramifications they will have to face later in their lives when they reach adulthood.

It is Ruining Relationships

It is widely known that you cannot sustain a healthy relationship with someone else if you do not love yourself. Unfortunately, many people struggle with self-esteem issues that stem from their childhood. This means that a lot of relationships are ruined by otherwise healthy people who never learned to cope with their mental challenges. The stigma that surrounds mental health is creating fractured relationships in our society that are more detrimental than we realize.

Mental health is an incredibly important topic that always seems to get overlooked. Fortunately, there are efforts being made that will help raise awareness of this subject. Take some time out of your day to talk to your friends and family. Let them know that they are not alone and that the stigma surrounding mental health is a misconception.
