Common Issues in Your Bathroom That Require Action

Bathrooms should be a place of privacy and comfort. They’re one of the few places in a house where you can be at your most vulnerable and for that to be okay. It’s hard to feel that way if your bathroom suffers from one or more common bathroom issues requiring your attention.

Clogged Drains

Given all the gunk that makes its way down bathroom drains, it’s really more of a surprise that they don’t get clogged more often than they do (especially if you have anyone with long hair using them). Clogged drains are annoying, but they go beyond a mere nuisance.

Your plumbing can’t drain properly with a clog. Depending on the drain, you may try to clear the clog with a plunger or a snake, or by taking some of the pipes apart and cleaning them out. Resist the urge to use drain cleaners to solve the problem. They tend to be rough on pipes and may cause more serious problems down the road.

Leaks

Have you ever walked into your bathroom and heard the tell-tale drip of water from your faucet or showerhead? Or maybe your toilet has been running nonstop, at least a little bit.

Those leaks add up fast. Your home may be losing up to 20,000 gallons of water a year due to leaks. Not only does that increase how much you owe on your water bill, but it’s also needlessly wasteful. Don’t delay–address the leaks as soon as possible to minimize the waste and save water.

Mold

Bathrooms can be pretty damp places, which is a major contributor to mold growth. If you notice signs of mold growth in your bathroom, act immediately to destroy it. Once you’ve dealt with the mold, take steps to prevent it from coming back. Dehumidify your bathroom and ventilate it with a fan both during and after showering. Open any doors and windows, and wash towels, mats, and shower curtains regularly. Squeegee your shower after using it to get rid of as much water as possible.

Don’t be complacent and allow problems like clogged drains, leaks, or mold to go unchecked. These issues will only worsen over time, causing problems for you, your household, and any guests needing to use your bathroom. Keep an eye out for signs of these and other common bathroom issues so you can address them before they get worse and become more difficult to fix.
