Walking around with a cold sore can feel embarrassing and uncomfortable. Not to mention that they often pop up at the worst times — such as during the holiday season. There is such a large stigma around cold sores that we often forget how common they are, and in fact, the CDC estimates that by the time you reach your 20s, half the people you meet have already been infected with it. There are 3.7 billion people worldwide that carry it according to the World Health Organization. So, why do we feel so ashamed by them?
The social stigma associated with cold sores can be traced back to its portrayal in media, television, and the internet as disgusting and shameful. One of the earliest references to herpes was in Romeo and Juliet, where Shakespeare wrote about the spread of oral herpes: “O’er ladies lips, who straight on kisses dream, which oft the angry Mab with blisters plagues, because their breaths with sweetmeats tainted are.” The harmful discourse around HSV causes people who have it to be embarrassed to share their herpes status with anyone, even their own partners.
People are also reluctant to find better ways to treat it, given that the trip to CVS for over the counter treatment can feel overwhelming enough. However, if you do have HSV it’s extremely important to understand which of the two most common types you have: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Knowing which kind you are carrying will allow you to better treat your symptoms and prevent from spreading.
To better understand the two types and their treatment options, the team at hims created an infographic on HSV-1 and HSV-2. Read on for more details and take a look at their prescription treatment that gets rid of cold sores in just 24 hours.
