Does lighting affect student concentration in the classroom?

HomeTechnologyDoes lighting affect student concentration in the classroom?

Several studies have confirmed that blue light-emitting from laptops, smartphones, and tablets can hinder sleep patterns. Thus, having the right form of light becomes fundamental for enhancing the student’s ability to concentrate better in the classroom.

Fluorescent lights often create several problems in classrooms. Now, this is because fluorescent lights flicker a lot and that interferes with the student’s concentration. However, dynamic LED lighting is a great replacement for fluorescent light as they don’t flicker much and offer better lighting.

Here are some other ways lighting can have an impact on students:

Productivity and mood

Several studies state that the lighting condition of any classroom can have a direct impact on the mood and productivity of the students. While adequate lighting can enhance their mood and energy levels, poor lighting may cause adverse effects. For instance, low levels of lighting are often linked with stress, anxiety, depression, and other health issues in children.  Such adverse issues can not only hamper the ability to concentrate on what they are studying but lead to a significant performance dip.

Affects the sleep pattern

If the indoor lighting solution installed emits blue light, it may hamper the sleeping pattern of the students. Studies also show that blue light primarily interferes with sleeping patterns in two ways. Firstly, it has the potential to throw the body’s natural circadian rhythms for a toss. And secondly, it shakes the production of sleep hormones in the body for the worse. Students might stay up late for completing their assignments or for examinations, this might eventually make them feel lethargic and dizzy in the mornings.

Alertness

Right light not only improves mood and productivity but also enhances student’s energy and motivation levels. LED lighting keeps the kids more alert and focused on the topics that are being taught during the day. This will eventually lead to a better understanding of the topic and one will see a noticeable difference in their performance.

There are some schools that are taking action and opting for LED lighting instead of fluorescent lights. However, we have a long road ahead of us. When one changes the lighting in a classroom it can markedly improve educational outcomes.

In the end, make sure that the interior lighting solution installed inside provides uniform and glare-free illumination. For instance, one can opt for educational lighting solutions provided by Wipro Lighting as they are designed to favour student’s comfort, performance and productivity.
