How to Manage as a Newly Single Dad

HomeEducationalHow to Manage as a Newly Single Dad

Single parents deserve all of the kudos in the world. Parenting is never easy, but flying it solo is even more challenging. This is especially true when single parenthood is sprung on you suddenly. While there is no handbook that could ever walk you through every challenge you will face as a single dad there are a few basic steps you can take to make things a little easier for yourself.

Find Support

Every single parent needs support. If you are lucky enough to have a close-knit group of friends or family nearby, be sure to enlist their help. There will be times when you need to take a break and just get away for a little while.

Doing so will help you be a better parent, so don’t let guilt stop you from leaving your kids with a friend, family member, or babysitter. Additionally, there will be times when you simply need to talk to other parents who understand your situation. Find a single parent or Dad’s support group if you don’t have a built-in support group.

Change Your Living Situation

If you are used to having two adults share the workload at home, suddenly facing everything on your own can be extremely overwhelming. Finding ways to cut back on that workload can help out immensely.

If you can afford it, consider hiring house cleaning and landscape professionals. You might even consider trading out your larger home for a smaller one. A smaller home will be much easier to clean and maintain than a large home.

Find Healthy Outlets

Parenting solo is not for the faint of heart. In the midst of your intense joys and heartwarming feelings of love, there will be times of blood-boiling anger, overwhelming exhaustion, and hopeless despondency. Parenting in any of these states of mind won’t get you anywhere good. Instead, allow yourself healthy outlets. Common options include taking a walk, working out, gardening, playing a sport, meditating, practicing an instrument, or working on a hobby. You will find that you are a much more effective parent when you are in a healthy, calm state of mind and regularly take the time to refuel.

Of course, the most important thing you can do as a single dad is to maintain your perspective. Remember that childhood is fleeting and will be over before you know it, so try to enjoy each moment with your kids. You won’t be able to control everything, but learning to be ok with that is half the battle. Breathe, relax, let go of the things that don’t matter, keep your chin up, and have confidence in your ability to be the best dad possible for your children.
