The Application of AI in IoT and Wearable Devices

HomeTechnologyThe Application of AI in IoT and Wearable Devices

Through the years, technology has grown by leaps and bounds. It came to the point that innovators developed artificial intelligence – a form of tech that simulates the human mind. This innovation has sparked the interest of many. Fortune 500 companies and start-ups alike are in a race to develop leading AI-enabled gadgets, particularly wearable devices.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, is one of the most popular trends in technology today, having established uses across various industries. It’s a form of tech that simulates human intelligence while operating at higher speeds. Think of Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa – they’re forms of artificial intelligence that are widely used today. Because of this innovation, there were many more technological breakthroughs in different sectors such as healthcare, finance, and among others. The usage of artificial intelligence isn’t just limited to computers, it’s good to know that they’re also used in the IoT and wearable devices, too.

What Is IoT?

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical objects that are connected to the Internet for the exchange of data – increasing the efficiency and productivity of services. These devices are equipped with sensors and software that makes communication between these gadgets possible.

The Applications of AI in IoT and Wearable Devices

Because of the power of artificial intelligence, technology is now being incorporated into IoT and wearable devices. Some of its applications are now part of our day-to-day lives. Let’s dive into the major applications of AI in these devices:

Smart Homes

Does controlling your house with some gadgets sound like a good idea? Fortunately, smart homes are possible thanks to artificial intelligence. These homes make use of AI in the form of lighting, appliances, and connected sensors to collect data for analysis. And with the power of AI, these devices can optimize the way you live your life – such as utilities and services that can give you a more efficient lifestyle.

We see a lot of smart appliances in the market today – refrigerators, air conditioners, and lighting are some of the popular ones.  Smart refrigerators, for example, can help reduce your carbon emissions and help you cut costs. How? They adjust the temperature based on the food it contains. Other AI-enabled refrigerators could even read out recipes for you to help you stock up on the right items in your next grocery run. One thing’s for sure – you’ll have many options for smart technology when building your smart home

Fitness

While traditional watches are still popular, smartwatches are increasingly being used. This holds true, especially for fitness enthusiasts – those who like tracking their heart rate and their step count for the day. AI-enabled smartwatches are easy and convenient to use, plus you can connect them to your smartphones, which could be useful if you want to view your notifications on your smartwatch. Through AI sensors, some watches can even detect possible health issues.

Healthcare

Just like how artificial intelligence revolutionized the fitness industry, it also changed the game in the field of healthcare. With more innovations utilizing this technology, more AI-enabled gadgets are being used for health purposes.

One such application is in the determination of a woman’s fertility peak. Ava, a digital diagnostics and therapeutics company, introduced the use of smart bracelets for identifying a woman’s fertile period. Together with using a mobile app that’s powered by AI, it monitors body temperature together with other hormonal changes. This data is then collected for analysis by artificial intelligence. Afterward, the application provides its recommendations. The good part is that their analysis isn’t just limited to determining fertility peaks, but also menstrual cycles.

Another important application of AI in wearable devices is in the assistance of patients with visual and hearing impairments. Sunu, a healthcare start-up based in the U.S. and Mexico, aims to bridge the gaps in accessibility to those with vision and hearing problems. They developed the Sunu Band, a smart band that you wear on your wrist, to detect objects up to 5.5 meters away. By using ultrasonic technology to accomplish this, it perfectly complements white canes. This smart band uses ultrasonic technology to determine an object’s hardness, making it easy to navigate through various obstacles, like walls.  With artificial intelligence paving the road toward inclusivity and accessibility, the innovations will only get better from here.

Gaming

With AI taking the world by storm, it only makes sense that it would affect gaming –  one of the trendiest technologies today. Popular wearables include AI-powered headsets that are connected to a computer. Artificial intelligence can be applied in voice control to allow gamers to use commands for in-game actions. And if the AI software can detect that a player is struggling, it could automatically adjust the difficulty suited to their skill level. While AI in gaming is still in its early stages, it could help the gaming industry thrive by creating more personalized and immersive experiences for gamers.

In Conclusion

If there’s one invention that could change the future of many industries, it’s got to be artificial intelligence. While its use cases are still growing, more companies are innovating and creating new tech that involves AI. While it’s still in its early stages, this innovation has only shown great promise. It’s already used for building homes and detecting diseases – what could be next? One thing’s for sure – AI is here to stay.
