If you’re not careful about catching issues in your home at an early stage, you may run into larger and larger problems. It’s important to be aware about what can turn up! Here are some of the common troubles that a homeowner can encounter.
Pest Infestations
The type and size of pest infestation depends on where you are located – largely because of the climate. But there are certain critters that live in a large enough range that you’re going to want to be aware of them. First off: termites! These little pests delight in the consumption of wood – so obviously, a widespread termite infestation can seriously damage the walls and foundations of a home. Be on the lookout for signs of a termite nest; check your attic, basement, and interiors when you can. Small rodents – rats, mice, raccoons, or even bats – have also been known to make nests indoors during the winter. Keep an eye out for droppings! When their families start to grow, they can damage the house’s wiring and spread disease.
Water Damage
Prominent in humid and rainy climates especially, water damage can slowly but surely destroy your walls, roof, and doors from the inside out. Natural disasters like hurricanes, waterspouts, tropical storms, and especially floods are the greatest offenders. Water damage at that kind of household scale can cost untold thousands of dollars to repair, not to mention the costs of damaged items, appliances, and furniture. But even slight water damage can be nasty! Mold or discoloration on your walls or ceiling can suggest a leak. Act quickly if you notice it, but remember, prevention is better and cheaper than repair. For example, sealcoating is a method for protecting your driveway from moisture and other elements.
Outdated Systems
Theoretically this would only be your problem if you have an older house. Unfortunately, in this day and age, it’s entirely possible for you to encounter faulty wiring or piping simply because a cheaper option was selected by the homebuilders. The parts of your house under frequent use – the electricity, the plumbing, the air conditioning, the heating, and more – are what will inconvenience you the most when they necessitate repair or replacement. Too often inconvenience can quickly turn to danger, as with cases of lead-infested piping and exposed electrical outlets. So have these checked regularly!
These problems are indeed headaches, but it’s important to be informed. As annoying as extensive prep for common damage can be – you need to be ready. And afterwards, you’ve got a beautiful home to enjoy!
