How to Add More Living Space to Your Home

HomeEnlightenHow to Add More Living Space to Your Home

Sometimes, after you have tried what seems like everything, you just have to give up and accept the truth – your home just isn’t big enough for your needs. NO matter how much organization, minimal living, and creative, space-hacking designs you have tried over the years, if there isn’t enough living space, there isn’t enough living space. The good news is that there are many different ways to add living space to your home that are effective, simple, and easy. Here are three smart ways to add more living space to your home.

Build an ADU

The first way that you can add more living space to your home is by building an ADU on your property. An ADU is short for an accessory dwelling unit, which is a complete, separate living unit that can function entirely on its own. ADU’’s can be detached structures, be placed over a garage, or in a basement. ADU’s can give you a lot more living space, and the ability to rent that space out for rental income to offset your housing cost. ADU’s can be rented as apartment spaces legally, so if you need the space now but not again in a few years, it can make you a profit down the line.

Finish a basement

Another great way to add more living space to your home is to finish your basement. An unfinished basement is an opportunity to build more living space without nearly as many of the direct costs of building an addition. Finishing your basement can add another room to your home. All you will have to do is some renovation work and perhaps the construction of a wall or two to create different rooms in your basement. If you have an unfinished basement this should be the first method you use to add living space to your home.

Build a Patio

The final way that you can add more living space to your home is by building yourself a patio for your backyard or front yard. If you have a large back patio with ample furniture, shade, and comfort, you can give yourself hundreds of feet of extra living space at almost no cost. You can build a deck or patio yourself in a weekend for cheap, while giving yourself a whole new living space to explore.

When your home is too small, your only option is to add space. But adding living space to your home is a lot easier said than done. Consider these three methods for a simple and easy way to add more living space to your home.
