How to Vacuum Floors Properly for a Cleaner and Longer-Lasting Home

HomeProductivityHow to Vacuum Floors Properly for a Cleaner and Longer-Lasting Home

Your floors see use every day. All that walking around is bound to spread dirt and dust on them–there isn’t a way around it, no matter how hard you try to prevent it. If left unaddressed, that will damage your floor, decreasing its beauty and shortening its life. Vacuuming your floor is one of the best ways to clean it, as long as you do it the right way.

Start With an Empty Vacuum

When was the last time you emptied your vacuum cleaner? If it’s been a while, empty it before you use it again. In addition to boosting your vacuum’s performance, emptying the vacuum regularly helps remove germs or bacteria before they become engrained in your vacuum.

Depending on how much your vacuum picks up off your floor, you may be able to use it a few times before needing to empty it again. Just don’t let it get too full or go too long between emptying it.

Use Different Attachments

All those attachments your vacuum came with have a purpose. Using them properly makes it easy to get hard-to-reach spots on your floor for a more thorough cleaning. A thorough cleaning protects your home in more ways than one. Crumbs can accumulate in your carpets and attract pests. Pests can contaminate your food and damage your home and belongings.

Properly vacuuming your floors makes your home less hospitable to them. Use the different attachments to vacuum upholstery, get the crumbs in cracks, crevices, and corners, dust delicate surfaces, refresh your mattress, and make cleaning stairs a breeze.

Be Thorough

Vacuuming isn’t the most fun thing to do, which makes it tempting to move quickly to get it done as fast as possible. You can’t do a good job if you rush it though. Vacuum slowly in a straight line back and forth to pick up as much debris as possible. Overlap your rows to make sure you cover everything. Don’t just go in one single direction though. Once you’ve vacuumed the floor in one direction, rotate 90 degrees and go over it again. That will help you get as much dirt out of the floor as possible. Do this at least once a week to maintain your floor’s appearance and condition.

Additionally, make sure you remember to clean the vacuum. In addition to emptying the vacuum, clean the attachments you use after every use. Check your filter periodically as well. That will help you keep your vacuum cleaner in good condition so it can keep doing its job effectively as long as possible.
