It is our job as parents to teach our children the safety rules that they need to know on a daily basis. These safety rules can apply to all different areas of their life. Some safety techniques are a bit simpler, like teaching your child how to cross the street properly. Other safety rules are more involved. Stranger danger is something that requires children to develop their intuition about a situation. If your child is getting a little older, you may want to ask yourself if you have taught your kids these safety rules yet.

Stranger Danger

It’s important that your child can understand the concept of knowing who to trust in their day to day life. There are people in the world that aren’t deserving of our trust. They don’t have our children’s best interest in mind. According to Michael T. Gibson, you should have a secret code phrase that only you and your child know; that way, if there is a situation where an adult approaches them, they will know if they are safe. As your child gets older, you can get them a cell phone that they can use to contact you in an emergency.

Awareness

Most children don’t pay much attention to their surroundings. It’s important that you teach your child how to survey what is around them. They should be aware of the people who are near them and what is going on. They should understand what dangers might be lurking. In addition to this awareness, they should know what to do if something unexpected comes up. A good way to practice these scenarios is to have a conversation about what your child could encounter when they go somewhere. Ask them what they think they should do if a certain situation comes up. Correct their answers as needed to teach them the correct way to act.

Privacy

Social media and the internet are a big part of a child’s life these days. It’s imperative that your child understands that they need to maintain their privacy for safety reasons. According to uKnowKids, this can include not posting things to the internet that includes your address, phone number or last name. Ideally, you want your child to understand that strangers shouldn’t be able to identify their location or who they are. You don’t want your child to become the target of someone who doesn’t have their best interest in mind. Kids tend to be far more trusting than we are as adults. This is where they become prey to someone dangerous.

Being a parent is a tough job, especially when it comes to making sure that our children are safe. We can’t always be there for them. Because of this, we need to teach our children how they should be able to take care of themselves and keep themselves safe. It will bring us peace of mind as parents, knowing that we’ve done a good job and our kids should be safe in any situation.
