Finding Joy in Working for Yourself and for Others

HomeBusinessFinding Joy in Working for Yourself and for Others

There comes a time in many of our lives when we wish that we could leave the corporate world or stop taking orders from a boss and start working for ourselves. We think about all of the freedom we would have and how we could make our own rules and experience a better work-life balance.

It can be scary to take that plunge, but you can do it. However, you need to plan appropriately and make the right arrangements so you can succeed and be happy during this new chapter of life. Let’s talk about how you can find joy in working for yourself.

Ensuring That You Can Be Happy

Although many of us dream of working as independent contractors and following our own rules, we often make excuses for staying at a job that we hate. You might have doubts that you will make it on your own or believe that you won’t have enough money to support your family or retire down the road. While those are valid concerns, you just need to do a bit of planning and have an idea of a job that you can do that can make you happy and give you the financial support that you require.

The point is that you need to ensure that you set yourself up for success so you can know that you will be happy once you are on your own. Think about the cons of working alone and then come up with solutions. For instance, if you work from home and on your own time, then you may be tempted to watch television in the middle of the day or work long hours that can negatively impact your sleep. You can alleviate those issues by setting a work schedule in stone where you go to your home office, put in the work, and then stop at the same time every day so you can spend time with your family or get the rest that you need.

Another potential downside that you will want to consider is the idea that if you get sick or otherwise need to take a few days off, you won’t be making money when you may need it the most. The way to continue to be happy is to set up a savings or emergency fund in a high-interest savings account that will earn extra money over time. If you are in a pinch, you can turn to those reserves.

The fact is that there are many jobs that you can do that allow you to work for yourself. By planning, you can enjoy any of them and be happy.

Have More Freedom

When you are planning your new freelance career, you will want to create a business plan. This should cover:

  • What you plan to do;
  • How much money you will need to make it happen;
  • Where you will secure those funds;
  • Whether or not you will ever require more employees;
  • How you will market your product or service.

You also need to look at the current demographics of where you live and determine if this is the right place to live and work so you can make the most money. The freedom to work from anywhere is very exhilarating.

You may even find that your work allows you to move to another country. Imagine the opportunity to operate from the other side of the globe as you learn about and explore an entirely new culture. That prospect alone is enough to push anyone to take the plunge to work for themselves. If you do decide to move overseas, then you will want to research to ensure that you will have the legal right to work there and that you have what you need to succeed.

From a professional standpoint, you will need to ensure that you can qualify and obtain the necessary work permits. You’ll also want to consider if this new culture will be accepting of your product. Once you are dedicated to relocation, then you should prepare for your overseas move by saving the money you need to move and secure a place to live. You will also want to check your passport and/or visa to ensure that you don’t hit any snags along the way.

Make Your Work Easier

Wherever you choose to live, you can continue to find joy in your work by looking for ways to make the day-to-day duties of your business easier and more efficient. For instance, you can eliminate waste and the work necessary to move and store physical paperwork by scanning all of your files and digitizing them on your computer so you can always find what you need with the click of a mouse.

You can bring that concept to the next level by putting all of your programs and data on the cloud. By doing so, you will eliminate the need to carry around bulky equipment, and you can instead just take a laptop with you and access your files from anywhere in the world. On top of that, many cloud companies have their cybersecurity teams, so they can protect your data 24 hours a day on your behalf.

Another way to be more productive and happier overall is to find a comfortable space to work where you are around windows. Natural light is key because it releases the serotonin in our body that makes us feel at ease. When we are happier, then we are generally more eager to do our best work. Plants can have a similar effect. So, consider adding a house plant or two in your office and take a walk through the park during breaks.

As you can see, it is possible to be happy every day, even when you work for yourself. Consider these tips, and you can make the most of this new adventure in your life.
