Query Fan-Out in AI Search: How Brands Get Mentioned in AI Answers

HomeDigital SkillsQuery Fan-Out in AI Search: How Brands Get Mentioned in AI Answers

When a prospective customer uses an AI-powered search platform like Google or ChatGPT, they receive a confident, synthesized answer. Whether or not your brand appears in that generated reply is not necessarily about whether or not your content is weak. It may be that the AI was looking for the answer to a dozen adjacent questions that you never wrote about.

This mechanism is called query fan-out, and it is one of the most important shifts in how brands earn visibility in AI search. Understanding it changes what optimized content means, and it changes what winning actually looks like. In this article, we explain the importance of showing up in an AI answer (versus mere citation) and how query fan-out decides whether that happens or not.

How Query Fan-Outs Function

Adjacent Queries

When someone types a question into an AI-powered search engine, the system does not run one search against your query. It breaks that query into a cluster of related sub-queries, runs them in parallel, retrieves content for each one, and then synthesizes everything into a single answer.

AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT

Google confirms that query fan-out is exactly how AI Overviews and AI Mode work. The system issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a single response rather than matching one query to one page. ChatGPT’s retrieval behaves the same way when web search is active. It uses an algorithm that combines relevance scores across every sub-query.

In practice, this means that content which answers only one narrow angle of a topic has a structurally lower chance of being pulled into the final answer than content that answers several angles at once.

The New Keywords

Query fan-outs can be thought of as the new keywords. The prompt a buyer types is not the thing to optimize for. Instead, it is the trigger for a set of related searches the LLM runs on the buyer’s behalf. Those related searches are often longer, more specific, and less competitive than the obvious head term. A brand can show up in an AI-generated answer without ever ranking for the main keyword at all simply because it ranks for the fan-out query underneath it.

Citation Inclusion vs. Answer Inclusion

Types of Inclusion

Citation inclusion means that your page appears as a linked source underneath the AI-generated answer. That is a useful signal, but it is not the goal that brands should be ultimately shooting for. Answer inclusion means that your brand is explicitly named inside the generated answer itself. It is being recommended, compared, or referenced in the text the prospective customer actually reads.

The Citation Gap

Your brand can be cited on nearly every relevant prompt and still lose the deal, because the person reading the answer never sees your brand mentioned by name. They instead see a competitor recommended in the prose and your link buried in a footnote that they likely will not click. Being a citation source means that the campaign is close but not entirely successful.

Reframing for Answer Inclusion

The difference between citation inclusion and answer inclusion reframes what content and outreach work you should be aiming at. It is not enough to be a source that AI trusts. The content has to be structured and positioned so that the language the AI generates about the topic includes your brand’s name in the recommendation itself.

Breaking Traditional SEO Logic Without Replacing It

Not Just Ranking First

Ranking first was once considered the finish line, but AI-powered search engines have shifted that goal into a data point. Instead of being considered a separate discipline that replaces SEO, AI visibility should be thought of as SEO that extends into LLM-driven discovery. As a result, certain fundamentals (e.g., credible third-party mentions, domain and page authority, content relevance) still make up a large share of whether a page gets pulled into the retrieval pool in the first place.

What Changes about SEO Logic

What changes about traditional SEO logic is the target set. Teams now have to map the related fan-out queries alongside the primary term. The pages that show up in AI Overviews are often not in Google’s top 10 organic results for the same query. However, a page that organically ranks first is more likely to get cited by AI systems than one that ranks tenth. These findings mean that authority still matters, but it is no longer a full gate to visibility.

Passage-Level Relevance

Passage-level relevance is increasingly what gets retrieved, because AI-powered search systems are extracting passages that answer specific sub-intents. They are drawing from a retrieval pool that traditional SEO signals still help your site enter, but each page needs individual sections that map cleanly onto the sub-queries that the model generates.

Prompt Categories Worth Tracking

Instead of testing generic prompts, it is more useful to track prompts that mirror how your buyers use AI across their decision journey.

These prompts revolve around asking for the best, top, or most well-recommended options within a specific category. This is the closest analog to traditional commercial keyword targeting, and it is a great starting point for most AI visibility campaigns.

Brand Sentiment

Brand sentiment prompts revolve around how your brand is being talked about in AI-generated summaries. The point of this category is to look for drawbacks, weaknesses, complaints, and other reasons not to choose a brand. You want to catch a narrative drift before an AI’s description of your brand becomes outdated or inaccurate.

Market Positioning

Market positioning prompts revolve around adding specific filters for audience segment, vertical, company size, or use case. A brand can win the generic vendor-search prompt but still disappear once the prompt specifies who it is truly for.

Brand Accuracy

Brand accuracy prompts revolve around asking how a specific product, pricing model, feature, or process works. This prompt category matters most for technical companies or complex B2B offers, because an AI-powered search system confidently explaining your brand incorrectly can do as much harm as not mentioning it at all.

Visibility Metrics Worth Tracking

AI Visibility Percentage

AI visibility percentage refers to how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers across repeated prompt checks. This should be treated as the primary metric for campaign success, and a percentage of 75% demonstrates a dominant presence.

Citation Percentage

Citation percentage refers to how often your brand or its pages appear as an AI-generated answer’s cited source. This is a really useful secondary signal and an early indicator that your AI visibility campaign is getting close to explicit brand mentions.

Traffic from AI

Traffic from AI refers to both referral traffic and identifiable AI-driven sessions where attribution is available. This metric is worth tracking, but it should be used in conjunction with other metrics because attribution can be so inconsistent.

Prompt-Level Movement

Prompt-level movement refers to whether specific prompts have improved, stabilized, or declined. This metric tells you in which prompt category your issue resides. A single blended visibility score can easily hide that diagnosis.

Competitor Visibility

Competitor visibility refers to how competitors perform across the same identical prompt set. This metric helps you measure real share of voice instead of assuming visibility in isolation. Premium AEO agencies can help your brand track this or any other key visibility metrics.
